The sky is perpetually shrouded by dust and toxic particulates; the seasons are merely varied intensities of cold and dampness. Bands of cannibals roam the roads and inhabit what few dwellings remain intact in the woods.
Through this nightmarish residue of America a haggard father and his young son attempt to flee the oncoming Appalachian winter and head towards the southern coast along carefully chosen back roads. Mummified corpses are their only benign companions, sitting in doorways and automobiles, variously impaled or displayed on pikes and tables and in cake bells, or they rise in frozen poses of horror and agony out of congealed asphalt. The boy and his father hope to avoid the marauders, reach a milder climate, and perhaps locate some remnants of civilization still worthy of that name. They possess only what they can scavenge to eat, and the rags they wear and the heat of their own bodies are all the shelter they have. A pistol with only a few bullets is their only defense besides flight. Before them the father pushes a shopping cart filled with blankets, cans of food and a few other assets, like jars of lamp oil or gasoline siphoned from the tanks of abandoned vehicles—the cart is equipped with a bicycle mirror so that they will not be surprised from behind.
Through encounters with other survivors brutal, desperate or pathetic, the father and son are both hardened and sustained by their will, their hard-won survivalist savvy, and most of all by their love for each other. They struggle over mountains, navigate perilous roads and forests reduced to ash and cinders, endure killing cold and freezing rainfall. Passing through charred ghost towns and ransacking abandoned markets for meager provisions, the pair battle to remain hopeful. They seek the most rudimentary sort of salvation. However, in The Road, such redemption as might be permitted by their circumstances depends on the boy’s ability to sustain his own instincts for compassion and empathy in opposition to his father’s insistence upon their mutual self-interest and survival at all physical and moral costs.

I think the takeaway with this tale is to never stop trying, to never give up. There’s no promise of something better, just the very human decision to will yourself forward. That if a better place is indeed out there, it can only be reached through effort, one step at a time.
Cormac McCarthy weiß, was er tut und das ist das Problem mit diesem Buch. Die graue, verbrannte Welt erwacht zum Leben, der Vater und sein Junge treten einem zu nahe, dass man es ertragen kann. Der Subtext explodiert, während McCarthy sich mit den Worten zurückhält, und so tauch man vollkommen in die Hoffnungslosigkeit ein. Er weiß, wie man die Leserschaft fesselt an diese emotional aufwühlende Irrfahrt durch die Postapokalypse. Ein wenig zu lang leidet man mit den Protagonisten, bis man zermürbt am Ende des Buchs ankommt. Der Schrecken gedeiht in dieser Welt ungehemmt und selbst mit Kleinkindern hat McCarthy keinerlei Gnade. Wer keine Angst vor einer bewegenden Geschichte und viel emotionale Kapazität hat, soll die Straße lesen, doch gerade Eltern seien gewarnt, dass dies ein Horrorbuch ist.

O, ¿es qué uno ve escondido en los libros mensajes según sus circunstancias? Esa es una posibilidad.
Sobre el libro
Un padre y su hijo, cuyos nombres no sabemos, huyen al sur. Caminan empujando un carrito, con escasos víveres, en ocasiones ni a eso llegan. Ignoramos qué pasó. Sólo sentimos la angustia de un padre por proteger a su hijo en un mundo desolado, cubierto de cenizas, de cadáveres quemados y fundidos en el pavimento. Donde algunos, los "malos" llegan, incluso, a comerse a otros con tal de subsistir.
Acamparon allí y cuando se acostó supo que no podría continuar y que era aquí donde moriría.
El hombre trata, con todos los medios, de mantener el optimismo en el chico. Este, como buen niño, resulta ser observador, curioso y, sobre todo, directo. Con gran crudeza aborda al padre y lo confronta ante ese oscuro porvenir. No se ve nada más que desolación y una inminente muerte, ya sea a mano de un grupo de caníbales o de la inanición. ¿Cuál será la mejor manera de acabar?
En esta carretera no hay interlocutores de Dios. Se han ido y me han dejado aquí solo y se han llevado consigo el mundo.
Cormac McCarthy, con escasos datos sobre los personajes, y pavorosas descripciones de un mundo sin luz, nos lleva a caminar por la carretera a un lado de ellos. Sentimos su angustia, valoramos al padre que protege a su hijo a pesar de su propia desesperanza, que busca un mundo mejor para él, a pesar de no creer que eso exista.
En la carretera
Me encuentro en mi propia carretera, vi a mi padre protegiéndome del mundo, aun a pesar de su propia desesperanza. Siempre capaz de mostrarme un lado positivo, aun cuando por dentro el terror lo carcomiera. Pero no sólo lo veo protegiéndome cuando era niño, sino hasta el último día, hasta el último aliento.
Dijiste que no me abandonarías nunca.
Lo sé. Perdona. Te llevo en mi corazón. Como te he llevado siempre. Eres el mejor que conozco. Siempre lo has sido. Aunque yo no esté tú puedes seguir hablándome. Puedes hablarme y yo te hablaré a ti. Ya verás.
¿Te oiré?
Sí. Claro que sí. Tienes que hacer como si imaginaras que hablamos. Y me oirás. Tienes que practicar. No te rindas nunca. ¿Vale?
Más allá de la conexión que yo pude tener con la narración de McCarthy debo reconocer su maestría para describir el mundo que rodea a los personajes. Su enorme capacidad para despertarnos sentimientos de angustia, enojo, desesperanza. Es un libro que no puedes soltar, a menos, claro, que pierdas la mano de quién te guía. A pesar de ello, días después, volverás a estar atrapado en ese devenir de emociones.
Él intentó hablar con Dios pero lo mejor era hablar con su padre y eso fue lo que hizo y no se le olvidó.
